Apprenticeship USA Gets Off To Good Start In 2011!

Well, so far, this has been an interesting year for Apprenticeship USA!
First off: some time in July of last year, I was notified by a Mr. Danny Deutscher that he had been awarded an Australian government grant ( Churchill Fellowship) to travel abroad and research the subject of apprenticeship. Danny informed me that in his native Australia, they were having issues attracting enough qualified people to pursue careers in some industries; most notably, the building construction industry.
His plans were to travel abroad, San Francisco, California being the first stop and then off to the United Kingdom and Europe to see how apprenticeship works over there.
Danny asked me if there was any way I could assist him in his quest to research the American model of apprenticeship in the U.S. and I told him that I would do everything I could to make his visit worthwhile.
Back home in Australia, Danny is a representative of INSTEP West, an organization that promotes vocational training and work placement for youth in Australia.
I reminded Danny, that, as stated on my website Apprenticeship USA , I have no formal affiliation with any governmental or labor organization (I am, however, a very proud member of San Francisco’s very own Local 104 Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association). I should state here that I do not profess to be an authority on the subject of apprenticeship.
However, I did let him know that , as a building construction trades worker for close to 30 years, I had had a lot of contact with dozens of tradesmen and tradeswomen, of many different trades, who had served their apprenticeship in many different parts of the U.S. My knowledge of the industry is from personal experience as well as research I’ve done from government and academic sources. I can honestly say that I do have lots to share with respect to apprenticeship in America and I do have contacts.
I think Danny was a bit surprised to learn that I’ve been managing Apprenticeship USA since 1998 without any funding from outside sources. Apprenticeship USA has been a true pet project of mine.

One of my favorites is the Career Guide to Industries. This guide is a valuable resource for the young high school or college student trying to figure out just exactly what area they want to pursue education/career wise. It's just as valuable a resource to the seasoned veteran who, either by choice or necessity, is considering a career change.

Well, here we go again. Traffic at Apprenticeship U.S.A. has been rather slow. I find that a bit surprising since there are many people out there looking for jobs and looking for career information. I will try to take a more proactive approach to spreading the word about www.apprenticeship-usa.com .

Hopefully, now that I'm retired from the construction industry, I can devote more time to keeping the website up-to-date.

The links that I've posted on the homepage are current and very useful. Be sure to take advantage of them.
